Storelgen – the big moose

If you’re arriving from the south via the RV3, chances are you’ve already spotted him: the giant, silver moose standing proudly at the Bjøråa rest area – just 8 km south of our campsite. Known as “The Big Moose” (Storelgen in Norwegian), this stainless steel sculpture has been towering over the roadside since 2015. At an impressive 10.3 meters tall, it’s a true highlight along Norway’s scenic highways.

The moose was originally created with a practical goal: to remind drivers to stay alert, as moose and other wildlife are a common sight in this region. Thanks to its mirror-like surface and majestic size, it quickly became more than just a warning – it’s now one of the most photographed stops along the RV3.

Fun fact: A few years after it was unveiled, it turned out that Storelgen was actually taller than Canada’s famous “Mac the Moose” in Moose Jaw. Naturally, Canada couldn’t let that stand – and ended up giving Mac a new, bigger antler rack. He’s now officially 6 cm taller again. 😁

In summer, there’s another good reason to stop here: the rest area kiosk serves delicious moose burgers!
So whether you’re on your way to us or already heading home – don’t miss the chance to meet Norway’s biggest (and shiniest) moose.
